Love is in the Air!

Love is in the air!  Yes....it is valentine's day so be sure to do something extra special for those that bring love and joy to your life.  February is also Heart Awareness Month.  This month's article lists all the benefits that exercise can do for your heart.  A great way to show someone you love them is to give them a gift to improve their health.  Whether it is a gift certificate to One 30 Fitness or just inviting them on a bike ride, help fight heart disease by exercising!

Heart Disease and Heart Health

You can control some risk factors for heart disease and there are others that you cannot.  Factors that are uncontrollable include family history of heart disease, your race, your gender and your age.  There are many factors you can control by making lifestyle changes to reduce your risk of heart disease.  These include smoking, uncontrolled high blood pressure, obesity, uncontrolled diabetes, uncontrolled stress and anger, having high bad cholesterol (LDL) and low good cholesterol (HDL) and physical inactivity.

Here are the benefits of exercise:
  • Strengthens your heart and cardiovascular system.
  • Improves your circulation and help your body use oxygen better.
  • Improves your symptoms of congestive heart failure.
  • Increases energy levels so you can do more activities without becoming tired or short of breath.
  • Increases endurance.
  • Lowers blood pressure.
  • Improves muscle tone and strength.
  • Improves balance and joint flexibility.
  • Strengthens bones.
  • Helps reduce body fat and help you reach a healthy weight.
  • Helps reduce stress, tension, anxiety, and depression.
  • Boosts self-image and self-esteem.
  • Improve sleep.
  • Makes you feel more relaxed and rested.
  • Makes you look fit and feel healthy.
Exercise can help you reduce your risk of heart disease and if you see other risk factors that you can control, be sure to call your doctor to discuss other changes that can reduce your risk even further!

Recipe of the Month

Cucumber Feta Salsa

ingredients:

• 1 cup (4ounces) crumbled Feta Cheese         

• 2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice    

• 1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper

• 1 1/2 cups cubed seeded peeled cucumber  

• 1 cup finely chopped red onion (i either omit this or significantly decrease amount)

• 3 tablespoons chopped fresh mint

• 3 tablespoons chopped fresh dill or 1 teaspoon dill weed

• Lemon slices & fresh parsley for garnish

Instructions:

• Combine feta cheese, lemon juice, pepper and partially smash together with a fork.

• Stir in cucumber, onion, mint, dill.

• Serve with pita chips and garnish with parsley and lemon slices.
